[PolyOne] Develop a New Type of TPE to Substitute Silicone for Medical Pipes

In response to the supply challenges posed by silicone shortages and the closure of disinfection facilities, PolyOne announced that it would introduce its latest medical-grade Versaflex?HC BT218. It is expected to be launched at the western medical design and manufacturing (MD&m) exhibition to be held in Anaheim, southern California from February 11, 2020 to February 13, 2020.

PolyOne's Versaflex HC BT218 is one of its wide range of special engineering polymers, meeting strict regulatory requirements, and other sterilization methods such as gamma and autoclave can be used in the field of medical care.
The weldability, kink resistance and tensile strength of the new brand are comparable to those of leading medical tubes including polysiloxane and TPE. It has been sold in the United States and has submitted USP VI and ISO 10993-4,5 certifications to the government.
It is worth mentioning that throughout 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued several warnings about the shortage of medical tubes and potential medical equipment. The shortage was due to a decrease in the supply of silicone, a key ingredient in silicone, and the closure of several ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization facilities.
The above-mentioned limiting factors have pushed up the price, extended the delivery time and increased downstream interest in silicone substitute solutions such as thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) tubes. In response, PolyOne formulated Versaflex?HC BT218 TPE for biopharmaceutical tubing.
